Arlington Drug Treatment Centers: Eliminating Genital Warts – 3 Types of Prescription Treatments

Genital HPV is the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease (STD) in America today. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia has revealed that about 20 million people are presently infected with HPV. Each year, around 6.2 million Americans get infected with genital warts. More women contract the disease than men.

Human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus that causes genital warts, can remain inactive in our system from a few months up to several years after sexual contact with an infected person. That is why symptoms of warts take a long time before it is felt or seen.

You may be carrying the virus for years and remain unaware of its presence. The best way to avoid infecting a partner is to have regular check-up with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to provide the right prescription treatments that have been proven effective in eliminating genital warts.

Still No Cure

Take into account, however, that there is still no cure for HPV. The treatments are guaranteed to get rid of the warts but not the virus. As a result, the warts may still come back after some time.

Dr. Timothy Yarboro, Physician Supervisor in the Dept. of Human Services, Arlington County, Virginia said that genital warts will often disappear without treatment even while the HPV is still active inside your body. It can reappear any moment even after you underwent treatment.

The following prescription treatments, when applied at the same time with cryotherapy (freezing of wart), electrocautery (burning of wart) or other medical procedures, will give you the best result.

1. Imiquimod

One of the most effective method of treatment that doctors prescribe is imiquimod. This cream strengthens the immune system so that it can defend the body better against HPV. It is a four-month cure where the cream is applied directly on the genital warts three times a week. Imiquimod is easy to use and don’t have toxic side effects.

2. Trichloroacetic Acid

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a strong chemical application that should be done in the presence of a doctor or health worker. Since TCA is an acid base, it should be applied carefully and precisely on the genital warts in order not to damage the surrounding healthy tissues. Treatment must be done only in a doctor’s office and self-treatment at home is discouraged. A doctor or health worker is needed to administer the treatment especially since the patient will find it difficult to see the warts.

3. Podofilox

Podofilox comes in gel or liquid form that is directly swabbed to the genital warts. It is a month-long treatment where application is twice a day at three time a week. Since this prescription treatment is easy to do, it can safely be administered at home.

Again, these prescription treatments only eliminate the genital warts but not cure the HPV. Various medical authorities discourage the use of these medications because of their strong chemical content. Improper use can damage the genital region and cause more harm.

There are various genital warts treatments available in the market today. However, self-treatment at home and over-the-counter drugs are strongly discouraged.
